Snoop Dog: 'Now Snoop Lion'

Snoop Dog: 'Now I'm Snoop Lion'

Snoop Dogg is no longer Snoop Dog. Now he's Snoop Lion
Snoop (Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. when he's at home) announced the name change during a press conference in New York, recounting a sort of spiritual awakening he had while he was in Jamaica to record a record with Diplo:
"I want to bury Snoop Dogg, and become Snoop Lion. I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, 'Snoop Dogg.' And he looked me in my eyes and said, 'No more. You are the light; you are the lion.' From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there. [...] “I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated. I feel I have always been a Rastafari. I just didn’t have my third eye open, but its wide open right now.”
Cue marijuana jokes. Seriously, though, Snoop's next album, Reincarnated, will be a reggae record.
The Snoop Dogg Twitter account is still active, but points to a Snoop Lion Twitter stream. At some point, he'll want to unify them. The easiest way would be to change the name of the verified account. Also, there's a new Snoop Lion Tumblr page, showing off a new track called "La La La".
Vice documented Snoop's transformation on video; you can see the documentary trailer below. We suspect that this was not a sudden thing...

On Becoming Snoop Lion

With no disrespect to other rappers, but they can't fuck with me in rap. I've won every accolade you can get in rap... I want to feel like a kid again.
Snoop Lion
Snoop is 40 now, and his kids are old enough to be proper music fans: he wants them to be able to enjoy his music; so, to him, that means getting away from gangsta rap.
Snoop Lion (still sounds odd to us) says he's done with rap entirely, as it is no longer a challenge. Familiar words: Jay-Z once said the same thing, and his retirement from rap lasted about six seconds.
Before he was Snoop Dogg, Broadus was Snoop Doggy Dogg, which in turn is an adaptation of Snoopy Dog, the nickname his mom gave him when he was a kid.
Oh, and one more thing... the Snoop Dogg-Snoop Lion Animorph.

Biography

Cameron Jibril Thomaz who was born on September 8, 1987 grew up in a military family. When he was three, his parents got divorce and he moved from one place to another due to their military service. From Germany, England, and Japan, he finally settled in Pittsburgh and finished high school in that state. When first trying his hands on music, his stage name was Wisdom Khalifa. The latter word was derived from Arabic which means success. He later shortened 'Wisdom' to Wiz.

Fresh out of high school, it was time to either sink or swim. In 2005, Wiz Khalifa released his first mixtape, "Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania." The mixtape was quickly accepted by the local scene and began to gain buzz outside of Pittsburgh. With that excitement growing by the day, it was the perfect time for a proper commercial album. Wiz soon dropped "Show and Prove," which Okayplayer.com claimed was "arguably the best album of the year." The accolades began piling up and Khalifa was receiving significant co-signs from XXL, Rolling Stone, and VIBE, alike. A deal with Warner Bros. Records soon followed.

A year later, he dropped a studio album "Show and Prove". Its ...

eurodance-influenced single "Say Yeah" charted on the Rhythmic Top 40 and Billboard Hot Rap Songs charts. Due to the well-performed single and his increasing popularity, he was declared "Artist to Watch" by Rolling Stone magazine that year. He, however, parted ways with Warner Bros. but was quickly signed by another giant recording company, Atlantic Records.

"Deal or No Deal" followed in November 2009, peaking at No. 25 on Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and breaking the Top 10 of iTunes chart in its first week of release. He continued to shine in 2010 when he was named MTV's No. 1 Hottest Breakthrough MC of the Year and became trending topic on Twitter and hot search trend on Google after giving away a street album "Kush and Orange Juice".

A third studio album which is yet-to-be-titled is in the works and might be released in 2011. As a teaser, its lead single "Black and Yellow" was rolled out in September 2010. It marked his highest-charting track, peaking at No. 11 on Billboard Hot 100. Also, it climbed to No. 10 on R&B/Hip-Hop and No. 5 on Rap Songs charts.

Snoop Dogg Biography

Snoop Dogg Biography

Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg (previously known as Snoop Dogg, born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., 20.10.1972)
Snoop Dogg is an American, Grammy Award-nominated American rapper, record producer and actor.
Snoop Dogg: Childhood
Snoop Dogg was born to Beverly Tate and Vernell Varnado and raised Long Beach, California, though it has been reported that he was originally from Mississippi.
His performing life began at Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and he started rapping when he was in sixth grade.
As a teen, Snoop Dogg was convicted of cocaine trafficking and sentenced to sixth months in Wayside County Jail. He was a member of the Crips gang and became involved in a number of criminal activities that caused him to be in and out of jail for a few years after he graduated from high school.
Snoop pursued music after making a number of homemade tapes with his cousin, Nate Dogg and his best friend Warren G (Dr. Dre's stepbrother). Dre heard a mixtape that featured Snoop rapping over En Vogue's 'Hold On' and invited Snoop to an audition.
Snoop Dogg: Musical Breakthrough
Snoop Dogg collaborated with Dr. Dre on the Deep Cover film soundtrack and on Dre's debut album The Chronic, along with the rest of Snoop's group at the time, Tha Dogg Pound.
Snoop Dogg began recording Doggystyle in August 1993. During this time he was arrested in connection with the murder of a rival gang member, Philip Woldermarian. Snoop was acquitted of all charges.
Doggystyle was released in November 1993 by Death Row Records. It became the first debut album to enter the charts at the top spot but gangsta rap became a watchword for the debate on censorship and Snoop Dogg's music was often cited as violent and misogynistic.
Snoop Dogg's second album, Tha Doggfather was recorded and released amid, and despite of, the turmoil that surrounded the American rap scene. Dr. Dre had left Death Row following a contractual dispute, leaving Snoop to co-produce his second album with Daz Dilinger and DJ Pooh. In addition to this, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg's label-mate and good friend had been killed by a gunshot and Suge Knight (Death Row's co-founder) had been indicted for racketeering. Angry at his contractual ties to Death Row, Snoop refused to release any more tracks until the contract expired, except for the 'Fuck Death Row' single.
Snoop Dogg's third album, Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told was Snoop's first album on No Limit, released in 1998. It featured a number of No Limit artists and was produced by Beats By The Pound.
No Limit Top Dogg saw Snoop reunited with Dre and was a commercial and critical success. The next album; his last on No Limit, was Tha Last Meal.
Following Tha Last Meal, Snoop returned to working with Warren G and Nate Dogg, releasing an album entitled The Hard Way. The single 'Groupie Luv' helped propel the album to number four in the Billboard chart.
